Chapter 29

Nolan

The hangar bay of the UGN Hyperion was bustling with activity. When the first refugees began to arrive, it was a chaotic scene. However, Nolan noted that his crew on this deck excelled in handling these situations, and it didn’t take long for them to regain control. Soon, the rescue and medical operations aboard the Hyperion were running at peak efficiency.

The UGN Hyperion had taken on all survivors from the UGN Fornax and UGN Taurus. Gathering all known survivors from the space above Mars took just over twenty-four hours. No one had slept since the operation began, and Nolan was considering ordering his crew to take breaks so they could rest. He had already relieved Sergeant Linqlear at the earliest opportunity so he could recover from his injury. After a brief discussion, the sergeant surrendered and went to his bunk. Nolan then ordered his crew to take breaks for rest. Although the first few he approached resisted, he convinced them that they needed sleep because no one knew when the next attack would come.

Nolan thought it was time to head back to his office and possibly rest his eyes for a few minutes before reporting back to the captain. Captain Kato wanted a full status report before they started preparing to depart in a few hours. Since the captain had visited this level just over an hour ago, he was confident that the operation was running smoothly.

As Nolan crossed the threshold of his office, his datapad chimed, drawing his attention. He glanced down and saw that the captain had called for a supervisors’ meeting. My sleep will have to wait, Nolan thought to himself. He turned around and headed toward the lift to go up to the bridge.

Before he could enter the bridge, a group of lieutenants and other supervisors standing outside the conference room door halted his progress. Nolan was guided smoothly into the adjacent briefing room for the staff meeting. They each took a seat at the long table and waited for Captain Kato to enter.

When Kato entered, he gave a prompt, and a holovid was projected from the center of the table. It displayed a sphere of Earth with small dots scattered on one side. With a wave of the captain’s hand, the image zoomed in for a more detailed look at the objects. It soon became clear that they were examining the upcoming defense plan for Earth.

Captain Kato spoke and confirmed this. He gestured towards the row of Tritons that lay in orbit above the Americas of Earth. Nolan noticed that the renderings still showed each ship as fully intact, when, in fact, most of the ships were heavily damaged and did not visually appear like they did on the holovid. The Hyperion itself was missing a large section of its port side. This section would not be replaced before the next conflict.

“What you are looking at ladies and gentlemen is the Admiral’s plan for the next phase of battle,” Captain Kato spoke with professional cadence.
